In the Shona culture, there is a saying that goes “Relationship becomes whole once food is shared.” I find that this saying resonates with me as I think back to the Black Heritage Series and Brown AfriSA Thanksgiving Dinner. The diverse foods served were from various regions. The different textures, colors, aromas and tastes amplified the diversity of the Africa and its Diaspora. Our hope is that when one ate food reminiscent of home, that it was a redemptive experience, but also that as one ate food from different regions, they appreciated the culture of other community members. We hope we prompted each person present to reflect on the value home carries and on the richness of the heritage of others present. We hope you considered how both, working together, present a myriad of opportunities.

The vision for the collaboration between Brown AfriSA and The Black Heritage Series was to reflect on Africa and its Diaspora, and to celebrate the richness of that community together. Why together? Because together we rise. Together we can move forward faster, develop more sustainably, make a longer lasting impact. Events like this give us a taste (pun unintended) of what that unity could look like. Thank you to all those who attended. We hope to see you all next year.
